Star outshine Sun Sports
Elliott Star Reserves continued their climb up the league table with a well-deserved 2-0 win over Sun Sports on Saturday.
The first half was a hard struggle against a young Sun side, but Elliotts' quality shone through in the second half.
The first goal was a header from Ian Cooper, who met a McGurk cross and gave the Sun keeper no chance. The second also came from Cooper, when he rounded the last defender. Any threat was dealt with by Jeffs and Quinn at the back and Mason also gave a fine goalkeeping display.
SUN POSTAL produced a ruthless performance, coupled with a clinical display of finishing, to convincingly defeat local rivals Bedmond 4-0, and, in the process, re-affirm their title credentials.
"That was as well as we have played for a long, long time," said delighted Sun manager Terry Hows. "We scored three brilliant goals and totally out-muscled them, which doesn't normally happen. We just need that consistency."
Bedmond enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but failed to breach a resolute Sun defence, marshalled by the impressive Mark Ash on his return to the club.
On 20 minutes Sun took the lead when a cross from Paul Haynes was stabbed home at the far post by Steve Patteson.
They doubled the lead 15 minutes later when a sublime step over and cross from Richie Johnson, against his former club, was met with a thumping header from Ben Cowen from 12 yards.
In complete control, the outstanding Cowen added his second on the hour mark, after a defence splitting pass from Darren Seabrook, and then Patteson rounded off an accomplished team performance with a thunderous 25-yard free kick that arrowed into the top corner.
"I thought we started brighter and were the better side in the opening 20 minutes. However, after Sun took the lead against the run of play, there was only one team in it and it wasn't Bedmond," said a disappointed Andy Kent. "The lads are all disappointed. They just didn't perform in a big local derby. We know we were second best on the day, and that hurts."
SUN POSTAL relinquished their nine-match unbeaten run in disappointing fashion after a lacklustre display saw them slip to a 2-0 defeat away at Sandridge Rovers.
Sandridge took the lead after ten minutes when captain Mark Andrews cooly slotted home the rebound after Andy Hopping had saved his initial effort.
Sun improved slightly in the second half, and should have equalised through Andy Wood, but he saw his effort crash against the bar
Sandridge sealed the victory on the hour mark when Alan Oaks scored following a counter attack.
"We didn't play very well and were beaten by the better side," admitted Sun boss Terry Hows.
Early-season pace-setters Sun Postal continue to lead the table by a solitary point following a 2-1 away win at Hatfield.
After weathering an early storm, Sun began to assert themselves on the match, and should have taken the lead when Ben Cowen missed a gilt-edged chance after being sent clear.
However, the former Barnet YTS apprentice made amends with a brilliant finish 15 minutes later to give Sun the lead. Revelling in his role of captain this season, Cowen collected the ball inside the penalty area, cleverly turned his man before nonchalantly dummying the keeper, and rolling the ball into the empty net.
Sun doubled their lead midway through the second period with a neat finish from top-scorer Paul Haynes, only for Hatfield to pull one back within a minute.
Telling interceptions from Gregg McLaren and Greg Totten ensured Sun held on to the lead and maintained their unbeaten record.
"We don't make things easy for ourselves sometimes, but I'm delighted with the win because this is a difficult place to come and a lot of teams will drop points here," said Sun boss Terry Hows.
Sun and Jets book final dates
OXHEY JETS and Sun Postal set up a mouthwatering Aubrey Cup final on Monday, May, after they came through their respective semi-finals on Saturday, March 23.
Goals from Wayne Gladdy and a wonder strike from Gary Page helped Jets come from behind to defeat Sandridge Rovers, while Dean Hutchison and Chris Eldridge were on target for Sun Postal in their 2-0 win over Met Police Bushey
Sun sets on Star
Out of form Star were defeated by Sun Sport at Watford on Saturday.
The team Star put out was a collection of old and new faces and it was an indifferent performance in which the team played without any confidence.
Matt Jones scored Star's only goal and it was one that would have graced Wembley.
Sun deserved their win and this Saturday Star are at home against St Peter's and will have seven players back from holidays, suspensions and a trek to Australia by a gaggle of players during the summer months.
Sun's cup hopes leave on a Jet plane
SUN POSTAL must be sick of the sight of Oxhey Jets. Not only did Paul Waites' side close a huge gap at the top-of-the-table to take the championship at the expense of Sun with victory on the final day of the season against Wormley, a 114th minute Wayne Gladdy strike sealed Monday's (May 6) Aubrey Cup Final, leaving the beleaguered Sun once again trophieless.
Deep into first-half injury time, Jets took the lead, though, with the normally reliable Sun defence all at sea.
A hopeful ball played long into the Sun box was met by Kevin Affleck whose attempted clearance found plenty of height but little distance. With the defence static, the unmarked Scott Simmonds pulled the ball down beautifully before firing a half-volley low past Andy Hopping into the far corner of the net.
Although Jets defended manfully, Sun's leveller eventually came on the hour when Andrew Wood's corner was met by Robert Coldrake, who headed home at the back post.
By extra-time, Jets looked the more confident team and were causing Sun all sorts of problems with their pace, particularly down the wing.
When Robert Coldrake was caught out of position with six minutes remaining, Jets seized their chance, and Gary Page who had been kept relatively quiet by the Sun defence broke down the right before crossing for Gladdy to poke the ball home from eight yards.
