Sun Engraving 2 Wymondley United 1                 1939/40                   Herts Junior Cup Final

Sun win Herts Junior Cup

By the odd goal in three over Wymondley United, the Sun Engraving carried off the Herts Junior Cup at Clarence Park, St Albans on Saturday.
On the previous Saturday the victors had beaten Colney Heath (St Albans) by 4-2, and Wymondley registered a 7-0 victory over Hertford Reserves.
However, in spite of the previous performances on both sides, the game lacked excitement and incident.
During the first half the Sun  Engraving showed clever positioning and team work, but many of their attacks were effectively blocked by a solid Wymondley defence.
After five minutes the Sun went ahead from a corner shot when Callow put a cleverly placed drive into the corner of the net.
Grimes equalised a few moments later. Fox delivered a good shot but Bell was equal to his demand.
Fitzwalter netted the winning goal when, in a goal mouth scramble, he bundled the ball into the net.
The second half was chiefly notable for it's lack of excitement.
In the closing moments Wymondley tried to get on terms and threw everything into attack, but the Sun were able to hold out.
The cup and medals were presented by Mr J Squire (Chairman of St Albans City Club) and a member of the Herts F.A.
