Sun - Yet to fulfil their potential 1973/74 from Watford Observer
Sun have done much to redeem themselves by completing eight league games without defeat, and taking up a challenging position in the top half of the division.
Even now, they are far from their peak.
Defensive lapses are occurring with depressing regularity:
"We are having to score four every week to make up for giving away a couple," confesses Sun manager Terry Rogers.
The arrival of Roger Birch, of many seasons' experience with Leggatts way, has been a major boost to the defence and Rogers rates his form this season as his best ever.
But a recent injury to him has left an out of form Denis Fletcher playing alongside Kenny Littleboy, whose dominating square back line, and their unhealthy goals against column is partly explained.
In midfield, Kenny Woolnough and Joey Harper wander creatively, spraying passes around and displaying bewildering footwork.
But neither are ball winners, and here Sun are blatantly lacking.
Long serving full back John Low and utility player Mick Court are among those who have tried in this capacity, but manager Rogers must still consider this position a vacancy.
The Riverside midget front line of Ray Cole, Jeff Bunce and Johnny Williams now line up for Sun, the mere mention of their height betrays the heading deficiency.
Cole, however, is the fastest and most direct wingman in the league, while Bunce and Williams both possess the happy scoring knack.
Sun's major strength is the size of their squad.
One or two absentees rarely harm their cause greatly, for they have indubitably the finest reserve side in the league.
In fact, Sun Reserves, managed by the vociferous and dedicated George Lapthorne, are top of Division One - probably on merit - and with youngsters such as Alan Potts, Alan Wadey and Dave Churchill, plus seasoned players like Tony Evident and Graham Seabrook, they would not disgrace the Premier Division.
My case is that Sun have two good teams.
They have six months to prove that they one outstanding one.
