Hatfield Town 0 Sun Sports 1                              1991/92                      Aubrey Cup Final

Maguire grabs triumph for Sun

A largely forgettable Aubrey Cup final was highlighted by the only score of the game early in the second half by who else than Joe Maguire.
The old poacher struck in the 48th minute to deny Hatfield a league and cup double.
Instead Maguire ensured that Sun's season, that had begun so brightly - only to fade midway through - ended as it had begun.
But the large Bank Holiday crowd that must have numbered in the high hundreds at London Colney FC, were not to be treated with an exciting final they had perhaps anticipated.
Hatfield had their chances but found Sun goalkeeper Stuart Greaves in inspired form, along with defender Mark Goodman, who seemed to win everything in the air.
Hatfield fired the first warning shot, in the fourth minute, but Paul Welsh headed Ray Kirby's cross wide.
Sun almost took the lead in the 15th minute when Mark Ash suddenly found himself in acres of space out on the left but Lee Western in the Hatfield goal did well to turn his effort around the post for a corner.
Five minutes later, Dave Pickstock drove at the near post but Greaves was behind it all the way.
On the half hour, Maguire crossed to the far post in the direction of Ash but he misdirected his header wide.
Goodman was proving invaluable with his power in the air for Sun in defence, rescued them along the ground in the 36th minute when his last ditch tackle spared Andy Stockinger's blushes, whose initial mistake it was that had let in Hatfield's Welsh.
It was then Greaves' turn to deny Hatfield again in the 38th minute when a breath-taking fingertip save stopped Kirby from a certain score.
It was becoming increasingly likely that a single strike would settle the tie and so it proved in the 48th minute when Paul Foster's header forward found Maguire who coolly lobbed the Hatfield keeper.
Hatfield did their best in search of an equaliser and became increasingly grumpy as they did so.
Paul Vye was booked for something he must have said while Simon Woolmer was lucky to escape a caution for some particularly colourful language to a spectator in the crowd.
They thought they had finally scored in the 77th minute but Eamon Rogers' effort was ruled out for offside.
Then, with what turned out to be the last kick of the game, the crowd thought they had scored but Greaves had somehow managed to tip the ball over the bar.
