Bushey Rangers 3 Sun Sports 1 1975/76 HCL Prem
Rangers sail on
Bushey Rangers sailed on to their fifth win in seven matches with a fine 3-1 victory over Sun Sports in their County League game at Hartspring on Saturday.
Sun Sports sole effort is only the fourth goal mighty Rangers have conceded this season as they march along the victory trail in their first Premier Division season.
With players like goalkeeper Keith Phillips and forward Joey Harper, the man who played at Wembley in an Amateur Cup Final, finding top form at the moment, it would be very surprising not to see them in the top four in eight months time.
This match certainly showed the Bushey' teams mettle.
Straight from the kick off they controlled midfield and only clever offside trapping by the Sun managed to hold back the stream of blue shirts.
Despite the sun in their eyes, Rangers had no difficulty in maintaining 80 per cent of the first half, mounting attack after attack from deep within their own half.
Only Sun's back four, Keen, Littleboy, Warner and Saunders proved to be the dyke holding back the flood, summoning up skill and tenacity to eclipse the blue horde's attack.
Rangers tall, lanky midfield man Dave Evans drew first blood with a 30 yard thunderbolt that gave goalkeeper Dave Wilson not a snowball's chance in hell.
Literally seconds after the restart, Wilson was hard pressed again as Joey Harper loosed a rocket that slid off his finger tips to sail over the bar.
Little wonder Rangers' manager Richie Dormer had a broad grin on his face when he ran to talk to his boys in blue at half time.
The start of the second half saw Rangers in complete control.
Any threatening ball that was allowed to sneak over the half way line was quickly snapped up by defenders captain Roger Birch and Joe Bates.
Move after move culminated in goalmouth scrambles in the Sun area but the valiant Wilson, despite many near misses, stood firm.
He was the instigator of one of the few fruitful Sun moves.
A long kick, headed on deep into the Rangers half was only just knocked past as forward Hugh Boycott-Brown zipped through looking for an equaliser.
But immediately reversing the position, captain Birch made it 2-0 after a hard pressed defender had passed back to where he was waiting to knock it low and hard past Wilson.
A short lull in play, when Boycott-Brown was hacked down in the Rangers half, gave the home side time to work out the third goal which Freddy Lloyd headed home from a cross.
Harper nearly made it four when he flashed a direct free kick barely inches above the bar.
Sun Sports saved some face when , with literally seconds remaining Boycott-Brown and Ray Cole pounced on a muffed pass, scrambling the ball past Keith Phillips for Cole to slide it in.
A delighted Richie Dormer said after the match, "Well, now we have got five out of seven with two draws. It can't be bad."
"There were no excuses from the players today and we were at full strength for this one.
I don't know if it's us but we have not seen a good side yet."
"I have nothing to complain about. How can you complain about a side that plays well everywhere with 80 per cent of the game." he added.
