Pre Season Preview 1987/88 HCL Prem
Sun set for turn around
Doug Davies, who was dubbed a "knight in shining armour" following his late appointment as Sun Sports manager this time last year, is bringing new blood to the Watford club following a season that he used as a "foundation to build on".
Sun, who have lost three players, have signed eight new players as they look to improve on Davies' first full season at the helm.
"We've lost Tony Price and Ian Thomas, who are going to university, which was a big blow and we'll also be without keeper Dave Vart, who has moved to Oswestry."
"Nevertheless, the signings I have made have helped to strengthened the squad no end," said the former Staines Town defender.
Terry Hows is the new skipper, while other new signings are Ken groom from Colney Heath, Andy Simpson from Leverstock Green, Peter Lawrence, who returns to the club after a break, Vince Bryant from Leverstock Green, Martin Gaffney from Lucas, and Kevin Hails, son of former Watford physio Billy.
Bryant, a giant six -foot plus striker, who Davies rated as a big part of his first team plans, suffered a setback when he broke his leg in a pre season friendly, and will now be out until at least November.
Davies has a new right hand man.
Brian Simpson, father of new signing Andy, who will be coaching the team.
Another new member of the squad is former England youth international keeper Vernon Thomas, a very experienced player despite being in his early twenties.
Davies has worked hard in pre season but feels his efforts will be well rewarded.
He is still on the lookout for more players, saying, "The rapport at the club is very good, and we have strength in depth, but I'm always looking to increase the fight for places.
