Sun Sports 0 Knebworth 1 1976/77 Aubrey Cup Final
Defiant Devereux
Only an outstanding display by goalkeeper Mick Devereux saved Sun Sports from a heavier Aubrey Cup final defeat at Clarence Park, St Albans on Friday.
Devereux kept Sun in the game with a string of fine saves, but he do little about Knebworth's 70th minute winner when the unmarked Rowney headed home Fulkes' corner.
Apart from brief periods, Division One champions Knebworth looked the better side throughout, and providing they can reproduce the same form next year, could make a considerable impact on the Premier Division.
A rather uninspiring first half saw Knebworth carefully building up their attacks with Sun confined to attacking on the break.
Chances were few and far between but Devereux did well to stop a point blank effort from Holmes and Andy Murphy cleared a Webb shot off the line.
But ironically the best chance of the half fell to Sun, when the tireless Ray Cole pounced on some hesitancy in the Knebworth defence.
He was brought down on the edge of the area, but with the linesman flagging for an infringement, the referee waved play on.
Sun began the second half brightly, and Kenny Littleboy had his shot well saved following a good move down the right.
Shortly after, Littleboy sent Dennis Fletcher into the clear, but the forward shot wide.
Then Devereux came into his own, first he palmed away a fierce shot and then pushed Deyner's header out for a corner.
The goalkeeper had to be on his toes again, when the in-swinging corner eluded the Sun defence.
But it was from the next corner that Knebworth finally took the lead, and despite frantic Sun attempts to equalise, it needed a 90th minute goal-line clearance from Graham Legg to keep Knebworth at bay.
Sun Sports: M Devereux, G Legg, A Murphy, T Evident, K Littleboy, F Woolner, J Totton, D Churchill, R Cole, H Boycott-Brown, D Fletcher. Substitute: G Seabrook
