Kodak Reserves 1 Sun Sports Reserves 3                  1990/91                      Reserve Cup Final

Sun Sports Reserves clinched the one sided Herts County League Reserve Cup final at mount Grace FC on Saturday with a 3-1 victory.
Division Three outfit Kodak were fired up for the clash against their Division Two counterparts and resorted to the American "psyching up" technique before kick off - Dean Allport sounding off with crude expletives about his opponents supposed lack of ability.
However, it was Sun's laid back "British" approach that won through and the fact that they fielded the best players in Dean Cripps and Tony Price.
Sun began the livelier of the two sides, Tony Seabrook heading over the bar and Alan Benjamin unlucky with a mis-hit effort, but they showed a distinct weakness in that Kodak were allowed too much time and space on the right flank.
Kodak's Tim Groom blasted the ball over the bar while Sun's youthful keeper, Colin Orchard, showed experience beyond his years when Kevin Spink burst clear and looked certain to score.
Orchard stayed calm, narrowed the angle and spread himself, thereby allowing the ball to be stopped by his body before flying out for a corner.
The rare aberration by Sun was soon forgotten in a splendid five man move that deserved a goal and ended with a miss by Ian Pepper.
Sun certainly were the more determined side, Pepper creating havoc down the right but failing to be rewarded with a goal as the Kodak defence resiliently defended wave upon wave of Sun pressure, led ably by Nigel Morrison.
Indeed, with the game goalless at the break, whispers of extra time were uttered around the ground but Sun were more patient.
The half time team talk had obviously centred around the fact that "a goal would come eventually" and the watchers were not to be disappointed.
Sun methodically worked at their passing game and their approach work and were rewarded with a short corner.
Pepper took it quickly, the ball fell to Tony Price and his cross was met by Dean Cripps, who needed just one touch to give Sun the lead in the 52nd minute.
However, it would have been a more difficult task had Sun not been handed a slice of fortune four minutes later.
The effervescent Pepper burst clear and was met by Kodak keeper Mick Canning, who appeared to fairly prise the ball from the attacker.
Ware referee MR JVA Smith saw the incident somewhat differently as Pepper tumbled to the ground and awarded a penalty.
Dave Barrett stepped up and gave the unfortunate Canning no chance.
Incensed Kodak replied in a remarkable incident, started by Canning.
Substitute Vince Boreham made his appearance immediately after the second goal and, having hardly touched the ball, proceeded to score a magnificent individual goal.
The Kodak keeper played his part with a throw to his right back and he in turn passed to Boreham.
The substitute then glided past two apathetic Sun challenges on the halfway line, passing another player on the way, cut the ball into his left foot and drove a firm, accurate shot into the let hand corner - making one wonder why such stunning individual brilliance had been left to stagnate in the dug-out.
Any complacency on Sun's part disappeared and Pepper created numerous chances in front of goal without due fortune - until, that is, the 86th minute.
A well timed through ball left Pepper in the clear and, despite an unruly challenge from Chris Cavanagh, the player was able to slot the ball into the right hand corner beyond the drive of Canning.
The same player came close to scoring again in the dying seconds with an ambitious chip that canning dealt with capably.
Sun spokesman Tom Barber said: "It was a good result for us. But we have won it before in 1966/67. I think we were lucky with the penalty though because it didn't look like one."
"At that stage we were lucky to be 2-0 up as it hadn't been a good game and was one sided with us just not getting the ball in the net."

Sun Sports Reserves: Orchard, Cripps, Jones, Barrett, B White, J White, Benjamin, Price, Seabrook, Williams, Substitutes: Harrison for Seabrook, Barton for Benjamin
