My baptism of fire
New manager Keith Hargreaves takes his Sun Sports side to reigning champions Cockfosters tomorrow (Saturday) confident that he can save them from relegation.
Hargreaves, the former Knebworth boss, accepted managership of the struggling print side at the weekend much to the delight of Sun chairman Mike Jeffs.
"We are very pleased to have got a manager of Keith's calibre," said Jeffs.
"He has got a very good reputation both as a player and as a manager, and I'm sure he will do a good job for us." said Jeffs.
Hargreaves, a fully qualified FA coach who numbers Luton Town, Stevenage and Folkestone among his previous clubs, resigned from Knebworth earlier this season for business reasons.
"I thought then that I would be too busy to manage a football team - but now, happily, that is not the case," said Hargreaves. "When Mr Jeffs offered me the job at Sun I was happy to accept," he said.
The 33 year old Hargreaves, who lives in Hatfield, takes over the post from Sun committeemen Don Keen and Frankie Woolner, who have acted as caretaker-managers since Malcolm Higgins resigned during the summer.
"I realise the club is a bit of a disaster ship art present, but I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Hargreaves.
"I've been down to look at the set up and chatted to the players - and I'm convinced that all we lack is a bit of organisation. The next month will be critical, but I am confident we can avoid relegation," he said.
However, it will be a daunting task for the new manager to keep Sun in the Premier Division.
On Saturday they lost 2-1 at home to bottom club Bedmond - and it will certainly be a baptism of fire for Hargreaves when they visit powerful Cockfosters tomorrow.
Saturday's game was a disaster for Sun.
Early and late goals allowed Bedmond to leapfrog over the print side into second from bottom position.
"This was a game we had to win," said Bedmond boss Derek Jones afterwards, "It wasn't an exciting match, but two points were essential," he said.
Dennis Tracey twisted in mid air to score a special header from Tom Healey's corner for the first, and although Sun equalised from the penalty spot after Larry McGettigan's cross was palmed over the crossbar, Bedmond grabbed a 78th minute winner through Eddie Moore.
