Substitutes boost Sun to memorable cup win
Two extra time goals, aided or executed by substitutes, sent Sun Sports through to the first round of the FA Vase at the expense of Vauxhall League club Vauxhall Motors on Saturday.
In the driving rain, Sun overcame the team from Luton in extra time to book a place in the first round for the first time ever.
Manager Dave Males revealed the tonic he gave his players: "I told the lads before extra time that the game was ours and I felt that the other side had run out."
Males sent on John White to replace Ray Purkiss just before full time and White contrived the opener.
He battled past his defender in the centre, took the ball down the right flank and delivered Brian Ashby a delightfully flighted cross for him to follow up last week's two goals with another.
Most of Sun's best chances fell to former Hemel Hempstead and Harefield United player Ashby, who excelled in last season's 4-1 Aubrey Cup final victory over Chipperfield Corinthians, when he scored and made two.
The best normal time chance fell to him when he saw an opening and tried to curl his shot around the keeper from the edge of the box, missing narrowly.
Males made another timely substitution when he sent on Jim Harrison, who had bided his time, waited patiently on the sidelines until Males told him to take off his tracksuit 15 minutes into extra time.
He obligingly repaid the favour and scored to make certain of their place in the next round.
He waltzed into the penalty area, slipped, stayed on his feet, and then composed himself to walk around the keeper and hit the empty net.
Motors, some three levels above Sun, only really shone through their powerful winger/midfielder Albert Hunter, who danced past Sun's right back Chris Price at regular intervals.
But once he lost the momentum in extra time, Sun were rarely troubled, except for a flurry of corners, which full back Tony Spicer helped to clear.
Even so, Peter Lloyd held tight to the slippery ball in difficult conditions.
they now face Division Two South team Harefield United on November 4th, whose boss George Talbot was at Bellmountwood Avenue to check out the opposition.
Sun will hope to advance even further in the Vase against injury plagued Harefield, especially as Motors are not their only Vauxhall League conquest: beating Berkhamsted Town two seasons ago in the St Mary's Cup final.
Males added: "It was great for the Sun to win as the Herts County League is not as bad as people make out; we've proved it's full of good sides.
Sun Sports: Lloyd, Price, Spicer, Hows, Foster, M Ashby, O'Reilly, Purkiss, B Ashby, Smith, M Williams. Substitutes: White for Purkiss, Harrison for Smith.
