Lift off! Jets soar over luckless Sun
Struggling Oxhey Jets burst dramatically to life with a 4-3 victory against Sun Sports in the Herts County League Premier Division on Saturday.
The game was decided in the final minute when Sun goalkeeper Peter Lloyd juggled a cross into his own net in the last minute.
This was Oxhey's first league win since September 16th when they walloped J&M Sports 4-0, and only their third success of the season.
They remain second from bottom and face a tough struggle to avoid a quick return to the First Division they left last spring.
Goals have been a problem during Oxhey's dismal run, but they stunned Sun with two in the first eight minutes through Chris Farmer and manager Benny Higham.
Five minutes before half time Tony Seabrook headed Sun back into contention, only for Bean to restore Oxhey's two goal advantage almost immediately.
Sun manager Dave Males used the interval to tighten his defence by swapping Mark Goodman for Terry Hows, and with this platform they launched a blistering assault on Oxhey.
This bore fruit when Chris Swann stabbed home a disputed 70th minute penalty and Paul Foster equalised eight minutes later.
But Oxhey survived the continuing Sun pressure and sneaked their vital win when Lloyd made his uncharacteristic injury time error.
"We did not think we were playing badly before this game and after getting an early goal this week there was more confidence," said Oxhey spokesman John Elliott.
"Although we won it on a bit of a freak we still got the points."
Sun boss Males criticised the first half performance of his defence, "It was atrocious, I have never seen defending like it in my life," he said.
After the match, Oxhey's outstanding player on the day Russell Bean - was approached by Sun officials, who called at his house in a bid to get him to switch clubs.
Oxhey spokesman John Elliott confirmed the approach and said: "I have received a complaint from the manager Benny Higham."
"We have not decided what to do yet but I will be having a meeting with him, the player and our secretary to decide what action we are to take as a club."
