Quick change Mackenzie rescues Sun
Fireman Ian MacKenzie threw Sun Sports a Premier Division lifeline on Saturday and extinguished Bedmond's title challenge at the same time.
MacKenzie, who was playing for Kodak in the West Herts League earlier this season, scored the all important goal that earned Sun a shock 1-0 win over championship challengers Bedmond.
Admittedly, MacKenzie's shot in the 61st minute took a deflection off Bedmond defender Neil Slaughter, but that did not stop jubilant Sun manager Doug Davies crediting MacKenzie with the winner.
"He worked so hard up front he deserved the goal," said Davies, whose side have five games left in which to avoid relegation.
"It was a tremendous performance by us," said Davies. "The commitment was there and I think we deserved to win in the end."
Bedmond boss John Cooper admitted that his side had blown their chance of catching leaders London Colney at the top.
"We just never got going and nothing went right for us, he said.
The turning point in the game came in the first half when goalkeeper Dave Vart denied winger Nicky Jones with a tremendous save.
The defeat leaves Bedmond some 16 points adrift of Colney and Sun with a splendid chance of avoiding the drop, especially as they meet fellow strugglers Colney Heath this Saturday.
Goal hero MacKenzie did not have time to celebrate his winner at the weekend, he was due on watch half an hour after the final whistle, which meant a quick change and a dash to the fire station.
