Sun Sports 3 Berkhamsted Town 1                          1987/88                      St Mary's Cup Final

Sun rise to the occasion for Cup win

Sun Sports broke the Vauxhall Opel League's stranglehold on the West Herts' St Mary's Cup on Saturday by beating Berkhamsted 3-1
On a difficult pitch at Tring Town, the two sides produced a splendid final with Sun, who finished third in the Herts Senior County League, ending their season in style by winning the prestigious trophy.
In the past seven years, the St Mary's cup has ended up in the cabinets of the local Vauxhall Opel League sides and Berkhamsted began Saturday's showdown as favourites.
But by half time, Sun were two-nil up.
They went ahead through Dean Cripps who managed to force the ball over with his shoulder after making a challenge in the six yard box.
And three minutes before the interval, Tony Price raced onto a superb through ball from Mark Anderson to beat the Berkhamsted goalkeeper Russell Ward.
The Sun back four were put under pressure early in the second half and it came as no surprise when Steve Hoar found the net midway through the half.
The Vauxhall Opel League side continued to press but Anderson wrapped things up three minutes from time.
He beat two players on the edge of the box and found the corner of the net with a crisp shot that sealed victory.
Sun boss Doug Davies said: "It was a tremendous way to end the season. After just missing out on the league title it was nice to win something. The players have worked hard and thoroughly deserved SAturday's win.
Two players, Price and Ian Thomas, both 19, came up from Southampton University in the morning to play in the final.
"That sums up the spirit of the side," added Davies.
