Leggatts Way Old Boys 6 Sun Sports 3                 1963/64               Rickmansworth Charity Cup

Proud record crashes

Leggatts Way Old Boys suffered a blow to their pride when an immaculate record of behaviour disappeared in the wind of a referee's whistle during Saturday's Rickmansworth Charity Cup tussle with Sun Sports which the Old Boys won 6-3.
It was the first time in eight years of the club's history that one of their players had had his name taken.
The row (and the referee's whistle) blew up when Old Boys' centre forward John O'Neill called for the ball from a colleague but was alleged by the referee - not a regular official but called upon in an emergency because no referee had been appointed - not to have called out a name.
After an argument, O'Neill, claiming he had called in the correct manner, the official asked for the player's name, but it was not given.
The referee threatened to abandon the game, but quick thinking Old Boys' skipper Tony Hayes saved the issue, gave the player's name and play continued and resulted in the Old Boys increasing their 4-3 margin to a 6-3 success.
Commented Leggatts Way secretary Mr A Rolfe afterward:
"It's rotten luck, we have gone eight years without a dingle player having his name taken and then this has to happen.
I was standing on the touch line and though John had called for the ball correctly. Had he not been pulled up he would have scored."
Left winger Hansard opened the game well with two early goals for the Old Boys.
Their other scorers were Butterfield (2), Haynes and Cullen.
Scutchings, Norman and Reynolds scored for Sun Sports.
