Sun Sports Reserves 2 Wheathampstead United 0 1965/66 Herts Junior Cup
Sun Reserves through to last eight
Sun Sports Reserves lowered the pride of the Mid Herts League - their champions Wheathampstead United - to reach the quarter finals of the Herts Junior Cup on Saturday.
One had to go back to pre-war days, when the club was known as Sun Engraving and won the competition, to find a Sun side making such progress in the Junior Cup, and it is probably a post war record for a reserve side to do so.
Sun deserved their victory on Saturday but it was not achieved without some anxiety.
In the second half but between times and in the last half hour Sun were dominant.
Despite the visitor's early ascendancy, the Sun defence made the Wheathampstead forwards shoot from a distance and did not falter.
Gradually United were pushed back and after 22 minutes a nicely judged pass by Tom Kent paved the way for Ron Lee to scoop the ball home.
Kent missed a chance to put Sun further ahead before the interval when he broke through the middle.
With only the visiting 'keeper to beat he shot over.
Wheathampstead threw everything into a bid for an early second half equaliser and their left winger nearly provided it when he let fly from the edge of the penalty area and the ball crashed against the woodwork.
Sun took a grip of the game again but it was not until two minutes from the end that they really clinched matters.
John Godfrey scoring from the penalty spot after a handling infringement.
