Sun Sports 1 Barnet Reserves 2 1964/65 Herts Intermediate Cup
An injury to Bunce upsets Sun
Sun, who played with 10 men for the last 35 minutes after right winger Gerry Bunce had been taken to hospital with a head injury, looked for a long time on Saturday as if they would be the first team to beat Barnet's second string for more than a year.
They went ahead when centre forward Terry Reynolds scored six minutes before half time and were still leading until 19 minutes from the end of this Herts Intermediate Cup tie, Barnet eventually grabbing the winner six minutes from full time.
Sun, who have recently been making headway in the Herts County League table, again seemed to be in form as the game settled down.
Wingers Bunce and Nicholson, receiving good service, gave the Barnet backs plenty to think about.
Barnet, on the other hand, seemed content to defend for long spells and rely on sudden breaks.
When these occurred, they looked impressive, but they were too few in number to cause any great anxiety to the home side.
Sun's defence broke up the raids with ease, Bernard Kent playing brilliantly.
In the first half hour, Sun had enough chances to have taken a convincing lead, but some desperate defending and good work by goalkeeper Smith, kept Barnet on terms.
In the 35th minute, Barnet made their only threatening attack of the half, and Bill Burke, in the home goal, had to keep out a good shot from Weightman.
In the 39th minute, Sun went ahead when Reynolds ran on to a perfect through pass from East and first-timed the ball home.
With the wind in their faces after the interval, Sun's defence had rather more to do, but they were holding out well until Bunce was helped from the field with blood coming from a cut above an eye following a heading collision.
Inside left John Matthews, who had been the driving force of Sun's attack, was dazed by a similar knock eight minutes later but was able to continue without treatment.
Eight minutes later still, a tiring ten men conceded the goal which put Barnet back in the game.
Inside left Louch turned on a through ball and sent a low shot into the net.
Barnet sensed victory and after 80 minutes, Simpson rattled the home crossbar, four minutes later, the winner came.
Pope crossed a low ball from the right, Louch deceptively stepped over it and centre forward Morris, just out from the far post, cracked it home.
It was a disappointing ending for Sun, but they must take credit for a fine performance against the favourites, who are, at the moment, runaway leaders of the Athenian League Premier Division's Reserve Section, with 37 points form 19 games.
