Elliott Star v Sun Sports 1st May 2002 HCL
The good news is that Elliott Star can look forward to another season of football in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division, after avoiding relegation at the weekend.
The bad news is that they lost their last home game, going down to a goal three minutes from time against Sun Sports, and had to rely on a result elsewhere to escape the drop.
There are now big changes afoot in the Star line-up, and the management is also expected to be restructured prior to the start of the next campaign.
The Borehamwood side had the better chances in Saturday's game, but the match was typical of their season. They lost too many games which were there for the taking and ended up fighting relegation when they should have been mid-table.
The game started with lots of rough and tumble, and Star's first real chance fell to Danny Gruar, who shot just past the post from 25 yards. At the other end, Billy Davies pulled off a super full-length save.
Just when Sun were beginning to take control of the match, Star should have gone ahead. In the 30th minute Jones made a bullish run and laid the ball off to Ben Taylor, but his weak shot was easily saved.
At the end of the first half it was honours even. Davies was forced to make a great save for Star shortly after the restart.
Tommy Flahive, after a quiet first half, gradually helped Star to snatch the momentum from Sun. Ian Cooper brought a super block from the Sun keeper with a well-struck shot, and Jones thumped the rebound goalwards, only to see it saved again.
Sun, who were put on the back foot, were becoming increasingly frustrated, as Star's defence of Lennon, Griggs, Day and Love dealt with all of their long balls.
Jones was replaced by Bell, and he immediately ran up the right and crossed to Cooper, who forced the keeper into another fine save.
Lennon was replaced by Luke Reid and, in the dying minutes of the game, Sun pushed forward and earned themselves a corner. The ball came over and ended up in the net, to make the final score 1-0 to Sun.
