Sun Sports v Kings Langley 4th July 2015 Friendly
Ashley Lewis rubbed salt into the wounds of Sun Sports last night, scoring in a friendly against his old club at Bellmount Wood Avenue in his first appearance for rivals Kings Langley.
Lewis, a powerhouse of a midfielder, has been the subject of interest from several clubs, including Ware, over the past two seasons but had remained loyal to Sun Sports.
However, Langley’s promotion from the Spartan South Midlands League to the Southern Football League means they have been able to lure Lewis away with the prospect of playing at a higher level. Lewis is yet to sign for Langley and is also thought to be attracting the attention of Northwood.
A former pupil at St Michael’s – the same school Paul Robinson attended – Lewis came off the bench for Langley at half time of their first pre-season friendly and the way he surged past his marker and unleashed a shot into the roof of the net for the third goal of the night would have had joint managers Ritchie Hanlon and Paul Hughes purring.
Ironically, Lewis’ goal came against the run of play and amid Sun’s best spell of the match.
Paul Hobbs’ Sun side, crippled by the loss of Lewis, James Armstrong, Edwin Twesigomwe, Craig Lynskey, Dan Weeks and Richard Pearce, were disjointed in the first half and struggled to get to grips with a more progressive Langley outfit.
Former Watford Academy player Ollie Cox headed last season’s runaway South Midlands Premier Division winners in front and then Alex Campana made it two from the spot with a brilliantly executed penalty. Callum Adebiyi won the penalty Sun hotly disputed but his marauding runs from left back were a feature of the first half and he was the outstanding player on view.
Sun, who finished a creditable fifth last season, were much improved in the second half and, led by the bright and inventive Dom David and Marcel Jones, they gave the Langley defence far more problems in the second half.
They eventually got the goal their bright second 45 minutes warranted, Dan Griggs finishing off a well-worked move.
