Sun Sports v Northwood 20th August 2016 FA Cup Preliminary Rd
More history was made on Saturday as Sun Sports went into the First Qualifying round for the first time ever by becoming the latest giant-killing act as they destroyed Northwood.
Near neighbours Northwood, only four miles away and a division above the Sun, seemed out of sorts and although they had the early possession they didn't do anything productive with it.
The Woods had two early chances in the opening minutes but neither of them worried Matty Evans in the Sun goal.
Myles Stephenson was upfront for Northwood getting high balls pumped up the field for him and although he tried to jink past Joe Horwood, Joe got his foot in the way for a superb block "a la Bobby Moore" on the edge of the box.
As the rain came down Callum Wright had the next chance for the reds but his shot narrowly went past the post.
By now the Northwood boo boys were starting to get on their players backs as confidence drained from them and the Sun took control of the game.
And Sun's control was well rewarded on the 36th minutes when Chris Blunden's cross was laid off by Jack Johnson to Tommy Walsh whose right foot drive was hit perfectly beating Woods keeper Thomas Spenser into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The roar of the Sun Sports fans must have travelled to Vicarage Road where Watford were at home to Chelsea. If they knew what lay in store they might have wished they'd have come to see the Sun!
Half time:
Sun Sports 1 Northwood 0
In the second half Dom David came into his own as he made the left wing his own and teased the Northwood right back.
Dom David passed the ball to Tommy Walsh, he then laid the ball to Nathan Pooley whose cross found an unmarked David who continued his run into the box and with an acrobatic volley hit the ball straight to the reds keeper.
Then came the moment when history was made for the Sun.
77 minutes into the match and Dom David went again on the rampage down the left, as he darted down the wing he quickly looked up and then let fly.
The ball flew over Spenser's head and nestled into the back of the Northwood goal to make it 2-0.
Sun Sports old boy Lewis Bircham came on as a sub and made Northwood's only real foray as he cut through the Sun defence and shot at goal only for it to go the wrong side of the post.
Sun continued to work hard and together as a team and thoroughly deserved their cup win to get a home tie against Hayes and Yeading of the Evo-Stick Premier League in the First Qualifying round.
