Sun Sports v Welwyn Garden City 5th November 2016 SSML Premier
A well organised Welwyn Garden City side completely took control of the first 65 minutes of this Spartan South Midlands league match on Saturday.
Sun were without Ryan McMahon and top scorer Dom David among others and at times it showed as there seemed a lack of the usual Sun zest and zing which the Sun fans have come to appreciate over the past few months.
But things went wrong right from the start as a free kick in the first minute was floated in to the far post for John McGrandles to head down dangerously in the six yard area for defender Yasin Boodhoo to scoop over the line.
City nearly went two up after only eleven minutes but Sun captain Joe Horwood made an important block.
But a second goal looked on the cards and it finally came in the eighteenth minute as a flowing attack from the Citizens with almost a carbon copy of the first goal, as a flighted ball toward the far post again was headed down, this time met by Luke Robins for a simple tap in.
Two nil down and the Sun seemed out of ideas and out of confidence, Tommy Walsh tried to get rally the troops with some hard tackles in midfield but the referee curtailed this by giving him a yellow card.
Striker Chis Blunden hobbled off the park after only 20 minutes with a tweaked hamstring and was replaced by Jack Johnson.
And then it was three as Read up front for the Clarets volleyed a shot at goal making the game all over bar the shouting.
The Sun made another change at half time and brought on old favourite Karl Penny for only his second appearance for the Sun this season.
Sixty seven minutes into the game and the Sun finally went forward and scored with what has to be said as their first decent foray at the Welwyn defence as George Hobson reduced the deficit.
The goal certainly changed the Sun as they came into the game more and finally had Welwyn on the back foot to desperately try to make another one of their trademark comebacks!!
Kyle Johnson combined with George Hobbs, who looked to be developing a nice little partnership, to give Hobson another shot goal bound which was saved by the City keeper.
A long ball down the left for the Sun was chased by Adam Drakulic, the City keeper miskicked leaving him sprawled on the floor as Drakulic took the ball to the edge of the area only to be clattered by a Welwyn defender.
Tommy Walsh had the last piece of action of the match when his 20 yard shot was palmed round the post by the City keeper with two minutes to go to give them the three points.
Despite having a few players missing from this match, lessons need to be learnt from this game before they take on Biggleswade United in the FA Vase next Saturday.
