Sun Sports 2 Stanstead Abbotts 1                           1953/54                              HCL Div One

A cold Saturday - but the Sun shone brightly

The weekend was all victorious for Sun Sports.
Their three teams all won, sharing 13 goals for the two that were notched against them.
The first team led the way with a 2-1 win over Stanstead Abbotts, the score being far closer than the game was in reality.
Proof of this was the fact that twice in the first half they hit the visitors' woodwork and yet at the interval the score sheet was still blank.
Sun also hit the goalposts in the second half, but it fell to the visitors' to open the scoring - eight minutes after the interval.
Sun still continued to launch attack upon attack, but until eighteen minutes from time success eluded them.
Then, however, half back Fred Walker met a corner from the right which curled well back into the field, sending in an unstoppable shot.
A minute later Boyle headed on to the crossbar, but two minutes later he put Peter Watt through and with a well placed shot he gave Sun a winning margin.

In the second division of the County League Sun reserves had a runaway victory over ICI Plastics Reserves: Plastics, one of the "Never give up" teams of a national newspaper, were never in the game with a chance; so much out of the picture were they that Sun goalkeeper, Fred Staples, often put on his overcoat as a shield against the cold wind!
Anyway, Sun led 4-0 at half time, the goals coming from R Palmer (2), P Crowley and A Barton.
In the second half Palmer, C Connor and E Shillito scored, to give Sun a 7-0 victory.

Sun Juniors continued their winning way at Chipperfield, without their fine team spirit and good work by the goalkeeper they might easily have been down at half time instead of being on terms, 1-1.
Franklin, who was Sun's scorer, completed his hat-trick in the second half and ten minutes from time Clarke clinched the issue.
