Hemel Hempstead United 3 Sun Sports 1 1960/61 Herts Intermediate Cup
Sun sink to the United's strength
United pitted their South Midlands league strength against Herts County League opposition on Saturday and were not found wanting.
Yet Sun, on an atrociously heavy pitch and in constant rain, still gave one of their best footballing displays for weeks.
From the 26th to the 72nd minutes there was only one goal separating the teams, and then a Sun defender was ruled to have tackled late and John Adamson put the United in an invincible position from the spot.
Gerry Bolino put United ahead following a corner kick in the ninth minute, but Terry Seaward replied for Sun within ten minutes.
At 26 minutes Norris sent in a shot which slithered through Haines' hands in the Sun's goal, but Sun had a reasonable share of the play, and United did not look safe until Adamson slammed home his 72nd minute penalty.
Considering the conditions, it was a very good game, and Sun were by no means disgraced.
The ball did not always run kindly for them near goal, and there was one 40 yard "screamer" from Phil Bass which Roger Beament only got to by "toboganning" over the goalmouth.
