Sun Sports 4 George Newnes 2 1953/54 Natsopa Charity Shield Semi Final
Easter final for printers
The woodwork and the visiting goalkeeper saved George Newnes a real hiding in the semi-final at Parkside Drive on Saturday, but they could not prevent a Sun victory and a pass to the final, which will take place at Easter against the Daily Mail.
In the first ten minutes, Sun swarmed round the visitor's goal, but because of the heavy ground conditions, the forwards squandered chances by too short passing.
Newnes broke away and scored, immediately Sun returned to the offensive but it was not until the 30th minute that Stan Chamberlain managed to level the scores.
Soon after resuming, Newnes again took the lead when the ball spun out of Harmer's hands.
Then the one way traffic started again.
Half back's as well as forwards peppered the Newnes goal with shots and success had to come.
J Blackwell made the scores level and a brace from D Smith saw the "Printers" into the final.
