Sun Sports 0 De Havilland (Hatfield) 1 1959/60 HCL Div One
Sun miss the vital point
Spare a thought for Sun, who went into this game needing only one point for the Division One Championship Shield.
They failed, beaten by a first half goal, which came against the run of play, and so lost the title and Shield to Marconi instruments on goal average.
It was a tragedy for Sun, who had by far the greater proportion of the play.
De Havilland had only two goal worthy shots in the first half, and one of them brought Jennings a goal in the 38th minute.
After that De Havilland hung on grimly.
The second half was mostly a tale of Sun attacking, but somehow their forwards could not take advantage of their many incursions into the penalty area.
Eric Williams and Phil Bass deserved better luck.
Williams saw a fine effort hit the side netting and Bass had another attempt tipped away by the goalkeeper.
De Havilland made short attacks but could not create the openings to add to their first half goal.
They found Roger Wootton and Brian Pettifer in excellent form in the Sun defence.
